Is Kommunity Brew Perth’s Best Kombucha?

Article by Gede Wirayuda

Are Kommunity Brew’s kombuchas, iced teas and herbal shots among Perth’s favourites?

We’d love to think so—but we’re hardly neutral. What we can share is why we’ve continued to call Perth home, how our drinks are made and why local customers have supported us from our earliest days at farmers’ markets through to today.

Born in a Backyard, Brewed in Perth

Kommunity Brew began in a backyard shed in South Lake, near Fremantle, in 2016.

In those early days, we grew slowly and personally—introducing our kombucha to Perth through local farmers’ markets, yoga studios and independent WA retailers. It was built one bottle, one conversation and one stockist at a time.

Although we now supply our drinks across Australia, Kommunity Brew has remained proudly Western Australian. We’ve chosen to keep brewing here rather than relocating production over east or having our products made overseas.

Perth isn’t simply where our business started. It remains a big part of who we are.

Our Howick Street Home

Since 2023, our home has been 67 Howick Street in Lathlain, surrounded by neighbouring inner-city suburbs including Victoria Park, Burswood and Rivervale.

Inside our purpose-built production facility, our team brews and bottles authentic kombucha, sugar-free cold-brewed iced teas and herbal health shots.

Being located around 15 minutes from the Perth CBD also makes our brewery a convenient pickup and delivery point for local customers. Perth customers can order online, receive free delivery on eligible orders over $150 or collect directly from the brewery.

Those who pick up their orders may even get the chance to meet the people behind Kommunity Brew and see where their drinks are made.

More Than Kombucha

Kombucha is where our story began, but our aim has always been bigger: to help change Australia’s drinking culture for the better.

Today, our range includes authentic kombucha, refreshing sugar-free iced teas and concentrated herbal shots. Each range suits a different occasion, but they share the same basic philosophy—make drinks with purpose, use quality ingredients and avoid unnecessary excess.

Whether someone is swapping out a sugary soft drink, looking for an alcohol alternative or simply wants something refreshing in the fridge, we want to make the better choice an enjoyable one.

Looking After Our Local Environment

Making drinks in Perth also means taking responsibility for how we operate here.

Refurbished and repurposed materials were used in the construction of our Lathlain facility, while solar panels provide approximately 70% of the energy used to power it. We also continue to package our drinks in glass instead of moving to cheaper plastic bottles.

Even our organic production waste stays local. Nat, our Operations and R&D Manager, takes it home to compost and use in his vegetable garden in Hamilton Hill—between Hilton, Spearwood and Beaconsfield.

These actions may not always be the easiest or cheapest option, but we believe looking after our community includes looking after the place we all call home.

Kommunity for the Community

Our mission extends beyond what we make inside the brewery.

Over the years, we’ve supported local organisations, events and people working to make a positive contribution to life in Perth. That has included supplying alcohol-free drinks to Mingle Aus events, which create opportunities for better friendships and social connection.

We also supply drinks to Ocean Heroes, a Western Australian charity that helps people on the autism spectrum experience the joy of surfing.

More recently, we joined Amy Flows for a sunset pop-up yoga class at Trigg Beach—taking us back to the yoga community that supported Kommunity Brew during our earliest years.

These collaborations matter to us because Kommunity Brew has always been about more than selling drinks. It’s about contributing to a healthier, more connected drinking culture.

So, Are We a Perth Favourite?

That isn’t really a title we can give ourselves. It’s something that has to be earned—one customer, retailer and bottle at a time.

What we can say is that Perth has supported Kommunity Brew from a backyard shed in South Lake to our current brewery in Lathlain. In return, we’ve stayed committed to making our drinks locally, supporting our community and finding better ways to produce the beverages we believe in.

We’re proud to be a Perth kombucha company, and we’re grateful every time someone chooses a bottle of Kommunity Brew.

Perhaps you first found us at a farmers’ market, a yoga studio, an independent retailer or in a friend’s fridge. However you discovered us, thank you for being part of our Kommunity.

And who knows—you may find us pouring kombucha at a local Perth market again soon.
